Young Talent Award: The sharp edges of technology & art
On Wednesday 22 October at 16h is the Young Talent Award ceremony, it presents the most talented graduates of Dutch art academies 2025.
Once again, this year's exhibition for 80% consists of projects by young talents. Firsts. Discover them before they are included in collections of major museums around the world. With their objects and images, they challenge you with a sharp edge, but remain innovative and playful. They pay attention, or rather, play with your privacy or make you wonder about the consequences of our online lives. The best projects also stand a chance of winning the Young Talent Award.
The new generation of artists is clearly questioning the impact of technology on our existence. It is high time to think carefully about the impact of technological and economic developments on our lives.

Jury Report 2025:
The jury noticed that many of the works confront us with our deepest humanity: our desires, longings, fears and alienation.
Do we still touch each other or have we lost the physical? What is consent? What is the ideal woman and how does big tech affect this image? And how does this affect women's self-image? And how can we still stir activistically when any critical utterance online can be used against us by increasingly dictatorial western democracies?
Poignant, urgent questions that young makers reflect on vigorously and that are excitingly imagined. Not with clear answers, fortunately - that's not what art is for.
They are no longer metaphors, but symbols of a new era!
For us as judges, three works stood out.
3rd. Shiny Object Syndrome by Maria Laura van der Velde
AI-generated porna starring: the designer herself. Van der Velde trained the AI's LLM with her own face to create a pornographic image of herself. Where does she stop herself and does technology take over? It makes for a diffuse and uncomfortable work. Does her work confirm or critique existing stigmas? Is it fetish, is it a carnivalesque peepshop? Van der Velde says she doesn't want to judge but the jury still sees an activist designer - no matter how many times she will be cancelled. The jury has a feeling they will be hearing a lot more from Van der Velde and look forward to this.
2nd. Spread the bread by Kiki Meiland
An urgent theme: critical self-expression is under fire. Meiland's work harks back to history: in World War II, bakers secretly wrapped communication in bread. Meiland has depicted this fact in a new way: you toast a loaf of bread, print a message on it with the Lidl wood burning pen, the recipient reads and eats and away the message is: an analogue Snapchat. Compliments on process optimisation and the software links. Meiland knows where she wants to go as a designer: to work with speculative design for non-governmental organisations like Amnesty International. Good luck Kiki!
1st. Alien between us - Laura A Dima
An interactive installation in which two people experience each other's heartbeat, breathing and temperature through responsive, wearable sculptures. Intimacy is created here precisely through separation. An intermediary for human emotions. Another machine between people? The jury was a little apprehensive but overwhelmed by Dima's work. Her sculpture feels surprisingly human: like a warm baby in your arms that you want to take care of and look after. Meanwhile, you feel 'the other', whether pleasant or unpleasant. Do we need an intermedial sculpture to still feel and experience each other? In times of far-reaching individualisation and polarisation, this is a pressing question, one that could not have been tangibly depicted in a better and more creative way. For Dima, metaforms are not metaphors but a conduit for a serious story and issue.
Moreover, the jury gives extra credit to the technical and visual execution.
Jury Statement 2024:
Manifestations Young Talent Award winner Daan Sonnemans - Kantamanto Social Club
Een groot maatschappelijk vraagstuk heeft hij doorgrond en vormgegeven in een systeemverandering. Westerse landen die hun fast fashion dumpen in Afrika laat hij hun troep terugkopen middels een bestaande markt met ontwerpers die er nieuwe kleding van maken. Als een kunstenaar en niet louter activist toont hij met zijn gecreëerde platform de absurditeit van het systeem, maar biedt ook een alternatief. Daan opereert als een David die het tegen Goliath opneemt en niet terugdeinst voor het duel. Zijn werk past naadloos in een ontwikkeling waarbij ontwerpers nieuwe richtingen aanreiken in plaats van met een vraag eindigen. Afgestudeerd van TU/e Eindhoven.
Op de tweede plaats zetten wij het werk van Dorothy Hendriks: First Church of the Estra-Terrestial. Wij zien in Dorothy een ware kunstenaar die met ongekende kwantiteit en kwaliteit werk maakt. Werk geboren uit noodzaak. Als transvrouw stelt ze de bestaande uniformiteit aan de kaak door ruimte in te pikken: transvrouwen worden onvoldoende gerepresenteerd. Liefde voor het leven gaat gepaard met liefde voor jezelf, Hendriks claimt daarom haar plek in de wereld. Maar dat gaat in het bestaande systeem niet zonder slag of stoot – en dit gevecht zien we terug in haar beeldtaal: jonge onschuld vermengd met figuratieve agressiviteit. Werk waarbij de jury het niet altijd droog wist te houden. Afgestudeerd van Zuyd Hogeschool Maastricht.
Op de derde plaats: MAI van Maraya Ivanova. Een werk dat water slurpende datacentra op de agenda zet. Door vier verschillende softwareprogramma’s te verknopen daagt ze de technologische complexiteit uit en brengt het terug tot eenvoud. AI-programma’s gekoppeld met fysieke bakken water: de gebruiker stelt een avatar vragen en krijgt antwoord, maar niet zonder te zien hoeveel water de AI daarbij verbruikt. MAI is een ware politicus, en weet nagenoeg iedere vraag om te buigen tot een activistisch antwoord. Indrukwekkend: als kunstenaar heeft Maraya zich goed verdiept in de complexe wereld van AI-systemen terwijl wij als consument AI uit gemakzucht gebruiken. In haar werk stelt ze dit concept ironisch aan de kaak. Afgestudeerd van Willem de Kooning Academie Rotterdam.
Overkoepelend
Het valt de jury op dat jonge ontwerpers de donkere kanten van het leven niet schuwen. Dat zien we terug in werken over femicide, onze relatie met geweld in het algemeen en uitbuiting en struggles rondom identiteit en adoptie. De nieuwe generatie kunstenaars omarmt de fysieke vorm en weet inhoud naar een heldere beeldtaal te vertalen. Hun getoonde werken worden krachtige tactiel en kwetsbare bouwstenen van de toekomst die tijdloze verhalen vertellen.
Design en technologie komen samen

Mark Hoevenaars, vrml Strategy & Marketing director Sioux: “Technologie heeft een grote impact op ons leven. Daarom willen wij als technologiebedrijf de discussie aangaan over de ethische aspecten die hier omheen hangen. Manifestations is een visionaire tentoonstelling met werk dat de complexiteit van technologie omarmt.”

De Art, Tech & Fun! expositie Manifestations is tijdens de DDW een van de gezichtsbepalende locaties tijdens Dutch Design Week. Meer dan 50 jonge getalenteerde kunstenaars die op het grensvlak van Tech en Art opereren, exposeren tijdens de Dutch Design Week in het Veemgebouw. Toegang is gratis voor het publiek!
